Suspect, Homeowner Shot During Altus Home Invasion

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS Okla_ A home invasion Tuesday night in Altus led to a fight over a gun and sent the victim and one of the attackers to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

The homeowner said he and his girlfriend were held a gunpoint by two men after they broke into his home around 9PM Tuesday. He told police he fought one of the attackers for his gun and in the process, got shot in the foot. After getting the gun away from the invader, the homeowner then shot him twice in the stomach.

Around 9PM Tuesday, Altus police started getting calls from people saying they heard gunshots coming from the 800 block of North Jackson. When police arrived in the area, they found a man that had been shot twice lying in a church parking lot. That's also when they noticed the house next door had its door wide open, and they figured out that house must be where the whole thing started.

"When they got to the house, they made entry because the door was wide open," Altus Deputy Police Chief Mike Bell said. "It had been broken open. They made entry in the house and looked around, and there was nobody in the house. Right around that same time, we got a call from the hospital that another gunshot victim had transported themselves there."

The victim at the hospital turned out to be the homeowner, Alejandro Obajaro.  He said he and his girlfriend were in the bedroom when they heard the front door get kicked open. That's when Obajaro went to see who was in his house.

"When he entered the living room, he noticed a black male and a white male standing in the living room area with guns," Bell said. "One had a shotgun and one had a handgun."

Obajaro approached the men, and they pointed their guns at him and made him and his girlfriend lay down on the floor. The suspects were talking to the girlfriend, and that's when Obajaro made his move.

"The homeowner jumped up and got in a fight with the man with the handgun," Bell said. "During the fight, the homeowner got shot in the foot."

Obajaro was able to get the gun away from the suspect, turned it on the suspect and shot him twice in the abdomen area.

"At that point, both suspects ran out the front of the house," Bell said. "The white male was lying in the church parking lot."

The identity of the suspect who was shot has not been released, but he is still in Jackson County Memorial Hospital, and police do plan to arrest him when his condition improves. The other attacker is still on the loose, and police say they do not have any leads on his identity at this time. The homeowner is also still in Jackson County Memorial Hospital, being treated for the gunshot wound to his foot. Both weapons were found at the scene.
