Survey says teen drug use has dropped

Posted: Updated:

Teens are using synthetic drugs less often, at least that's what one survey is reporting.

It's an annual survey done by the government, and it asks teens about their drug use. The results this year have been surprising to some.

Fewer teens are using, and even just trying synthetic drugs such as K2 and spice. The report was released yesterday by the National Institutes of Health. Eight percent of high school seniors have said they've used some form of synthetic marijuana, a drop from the previous year where 11 percent of seniors surveyed reported using the drug. Use among younger students is also down. And it's not just K2 and spice that has seen drops. Fewer students have also reported experimenting with bath salts.

More than 40,000 students were surveyed in the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades.

Researchers who conducted the survey say the decline is a result of the word getting out there about how dangerous these type of drugs are. Teens don't know what they are getting into when using them because the chemicals in them are ever changing.
