Supporters Of School Shelters Plan Seek More Time

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Supporters of a proposed $500 million state bond issue to pay for storm shelters in Oklahoma schools are asking the Supreme Court to grant them a new 90-day window to gather signatures for their proposal.

Attorneys for both the state and Take Shelter Oklahoma delivered oral arguments Wednesday before an Oklahoma Supreme Court referee in a legal squabble over the ballot language for the proposal.

Supporters say they were about 40,000 signatures short by Monday's deadline, but claim their attempts to gather signatures were hampered by Attorney General Scott Pruitt's rewrite of the ballot title.

The referee will present a report to the Oklahoma Supreme Court, which will then issue a ruling in the case.
