Lawton Woman's Christmas Cards Raise Homeless Pet Awareness

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ One local woman has designed Christmas cards to raise awareness of the thousands of pets in our area without a home this holiday season.

Janie Billingsley started featuring pictures of dogs on holiday cards last year, and it turned out to be a huge success. She donated nearly $3,000 total to four rescue organizations. Each card tells the story of a homeless pet which she hopes will trigger a response to adopt. She said the reward is tremendous when they rescue a pet.

"It's like they fall in love with each other," Janie said. "You can just see it when that animal and that new human companion come together and it's a match. Sometimes you cry, because they'll kiss them because you just see it. They melt."

All of the money raised from the card campaign will be donated. You can purchase them individually for $1, or in a pack of twelve for $12. They are being sold at Billingsley Ford and Hyundai on 82nd Street and Gill's Frame Shop on 'C' Avenue in downtown Lawton.

The cards will be available this week at Billingsley Ford of Lawton 8209 NW Quanah Parker, Lawton/ 580-536-3325 or 580-531-0278; Hyundai at 2505 NW 82nd, Lawton/ 580-536-3326 or Gill's Frame Shop,415 SW C Ave., Lawton/.580-355-3303.

100 percent of the proceeds will go to four area animal rescues that include Rainbow Bridge Can Wait, Lawton Humane Society, SWOAN (Southwest Oklahoma Animal Network), and Great Pyrenees Rescue of Oklahoma.  Last year they donated about $675 to each rescue for a total of $2,700.
