CU Seeks Volunteers For MLK Jr. Day Of Service

LAWTON Okla_ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'" In answer to that query, volunteers from Cameron University and the Lawton-Fort Sill community will participate in the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 2014. CU officials are hoping to recruit over 400 volunteers for the event. To volunteer, register online at www.cameron.edu/mlkcelebration/dayofservice or call the Office of Student Activities at (580) 581-2217. The volunteers will work on community projects from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Additionally, the volunteer effort will include a supply drive, with donation boxes and supply wish lists set up at locations throughout Lawton on Saturday, January 18.

"Cameron University is honored to lead this annual volunteer day of service," says Jennifer Holland, Vice President for Student Services. "The impact on the Lawton-Fort Sill community is enormous, and the personal satisfaction experienced by the volunteers is immeasurable. Our call to action today is simple: we need volunteers to register in advance and as early as possible. This allows us to allocate the appropriate number of workers to each project during the week prior to January 20. We appreciate the many members of the community who always help make the MLK Day of Service a success."

Online volunteer registration will close on January 10, 2014 so that project assignments can be determined. Volunteers will receive project details and site locations the week of January 13.

Cameron's volunteer corps on the MLK Day of Service will joined tens of thousands of volunteers across the nation who will answer Dr. King's challenge to do something for others. Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the King Center, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off."  Families, students, congregations, employees, and individuals of all ages and backgrounds will come together to celebrate MLK Day by making a difference in their communities. Initiated by Congress in 1994, the annual observance serves as a way to transform Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems and strengthens communities.
