Deadlines approaching for Christmas shipping

AMARILLO, TX - United Parcel Service, United States Postal Service and FedEx workers are getting a lot of overtime working to get holiday packages shipped, and if you want to a gift to arrive by Christmas you better act quickly.

"I'd estimate that Amarillo probably receives a good 25,000 to 30,000 packages a day during peak season like this," UPS employee Damien Miller said.

This week UPS has delivery trucks out on the road until as late as 10:00 at night, or even later, to meet the holiday demand. USPS will be delivering on Sunday.

"Tomorrow will be the biggest day for packages, today is the biggest day for cards and letters," Amarillo Post Master James Chambers said Wednesday.

Most packages that went out Wednesday will arrive at their destination in time for Christmas day, but if you wait until after Thursday, you might have to pay a pretty penny. For UPS, the deadline for normal shipping has already passed.

"You're starting to look at second day air or next day delivery to try and beat that Christmas deadline, so I would get in as soon as possible," Miller said.

But you have until Friday for first class at the Post Office, Saturday for priority mail, and Monday for priority express. All of those deadlines are not set in stone, potential winter weather could delay delivery times, so the sooner you can get packages out the better.

Miller recommends spending a little extra for signature guarantee and tracking, even if you get your packages out in time. Chambers says there are options for those who don't want to wait in long lines at the Post Office.

"The automated kiosks out in the lobbies can do everything that you can do in the line except take cash, you have to use a debit or card," Miller said. "You can also use Click-N-Ship to schedule one of our carriers to come pick up your packages at home. You don't have to even come to the post office and we'll still get them delivered for you."
