Cancer patients and accident victims cause blood need to increase

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - When wrecks increase like they did this weekend, blood usage goes up.

Not only is there an increased need for blood after accidents, there is also an increased need for blood among Cancer patients. Many cancer patients going through Chemo need blood transfusions to stay healthy and energetic. They need blood so they can enjoy the holidays with their families. It is also important to remember patients in the hospital need blood everyday, they don't just take off because it's Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

Another reason there is a shortage this time of year is because many regular donors go out of town and are not here to donate. "Blood is very important to Cancer patients and we all know that Cancer doesn't take a holiday, so not only do you have your serious illnesses, you have your Cancer patients going through Chemo that need blood and then you have accident victims on top of that and we just want to be ready, we want to be prepared before these things happen," Suzanne Talley who is the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Coffee Memorial Blood Center said.

Right now our local blood drive is in need of O-Negative and A-Negative blood.

If you would like to donate the Coffee Memorial Blood Center will be open this week.

*Tuesday (Christmas Eve) 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

*Wednesday (Christmas Day) CLOSED

*Thursday 9 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.

*Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

*Saturday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
