New Mexico urging vaccine against pneumonia-related illness

Posted: Updated:

New Mexico officials are urging everyone in the state regardless of age to get vaccinated, specifically against a pneumonia-related illness that's been hitting the land of enchantment.

State health officials say the vaccines for pneumococcal disease are now available at many doctors' offices.

So far this year, it has been reported that nearly 300 New Mexicans have been diagnosed with severe pneumococcal disease and 47 people have died.

A majority of adults who are recommended to receive that shot have never been vaccinated against this disease. Officials report only one out of three adults never receiving it.

Although flu is what most people are being vaccinated against this time of year, health officials in New Mexico really are trying to urge people to get vaccinated to keep this illness from spreading even further across the state and even into other states like Texas.
