Former Altus AFB Man Arrested in Child's Death

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS Okla_ Altus Police arrested a former Altus AFB man for the death of a child.

23-year-old Dustin Smades was arrested in the death of 2-year-old Curtis Hoffman. The investigation began April 6, when officers responded to 708 E Nona on a report of a child not breathing. Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said Smades' statements contradicted evidence found at the crime scene. Smades was arrested for three counts of child abuse by injury. Each count is a felony, and Smades faces up to life in prison for each count if convicted.

The United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations is helping APD in their investigation. Smades has been discharged from the US Air Force. Smades is being held at the Jackson County Jail on a $300,000 bond. The three counts of child abuse by injury could be amended as the investigation continues.
