Lawton Neighborhood seeks Answers after Sign is Damaged

Posted: Updated:

Lawton, Okla. - Lawton police continue to search for the vehicle involved in a hit and run accident on the east side of Lawton this week.

Police believe that one vehicle is responsible for causing significant damage to the entrance of the Regal Estates Neighborhood on New Year's Eve.

Now the neighborhood is looking for someone to identify the careless driver that destroyed the brick structure.

"You can't leave it like that. It's unsightly to leave it like that. You just cant do that."

Community members look over the damage done by a careless driver in the middle of the night. Saturday, part of the brick entrance gate to Regal Estates remains on the ground in pieces after a hit and run accident.

"The sign was built in 1970, and it is an important part to this neighborhood."

Neighbors believe it was a truck that ran off of Gore, onto the curb, through the grass, and into the decorative entry way. The driver then backed up, and sped away through the neighborhood.

The community is not interested in getting anyone in trouble. They just want their sign restored.

"We would like for them to come forward, turn this accident into his or her insurance company, and let them pay for repairing this sign. We are not interested in prosecuting him for leaving the scene of an accident, or being intoxicated while driving. We are not interested in that. We just want the sign to be repaired and put back like it was."

Community members do understand, however, why someone would leave the scene.

"I think they probably thought well I am out of bounds. I've been drinking. I've had an accident. I don't want to face the music on that. And I don't blame them for that. That's a normal reaction, but the sign has to be repaired. They are the natural person to come forward and do that."

No arrests have been made, but the police are investigating.

If you have any information about who destroyed the sign, contact 7News at 355-NEWS.

The Regal Estates community is offering a $300 reward for any information that leads to finding out who is responsible.
