Education still hot topic on Texas campaign trail

Posted: Updated:

The campaign trail is heating up in Texas, and education continues to be a main topic for those searching for top Texas offices.

Education has been key when it comes to political campaigns so far, and that is still a topic on everyone's minds.

Democratic front-runner in the race for Governor, Wendy Davis, has unveiled the first of her education proposals last night in North Texas. As part of her plan, high school juniors in the top five percent of their classes would be guaranteed admission to state colleges. Davis would also like to add more teacher aids and counselors in the state among other things.

Lieutenant Governor, David Dewhurst, who is seeking re-election also spoke of education yesterday evening. Dewhurst spoke at a benefit for the United Negro College Fund where he called for a review of "Closing the Gap 2015," a program that has shaped education policy in Texas. Dewhurst is calling for a new roadmap for the next 15 years of the program.
