Texas is second in number of people signed up for the Affordable Care Act

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Texas still has 6 million residents who are uninsured.

Texas ranks second for the number of people signed up for health insurance, out of 26 states who are relying on the government to administer the enrollment for the Affordable Care Act.

The US Department of Health and Human Services reports as of December 28th, over 118,000 Texans have signed up for the Affordable Care Act.

A spokesperson for the Texas Hospital Association told us there may be a reason so many Texans have signed up.

"That's good for Texas, primarily due to the fact that Texas has such a high rate of uninsured. We do have the highest rate of uninsured in the United States, and it's important for everyone to be involved to get people covered," Lance Lunsford who is the Vice President of Advocacy Communications for the Texas Hospital Association said.

And there are still 1 million people who will not have access to affordable coverage options because Texas chose not to extend Medicaid coverage.

We spoke with a local resident today who says he is choosing not to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.

"Personally myself, I'm going to get private insurance, I'm in the process of doing that right now, I haven't had any health insurance, but you know I'm going to get fined if I don't, so I've decided to go ahead and get it," said James Gorman who is a local resident.

The deadline to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act and receive coverage starting February 1st is January 15th.

The final deadline to sign up is March 31st.
