Stephens County Fair & Expo hosts calf and hog shows

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla__ Cowboys and cowgirls took over the Stephens County fairgrounds and Expo Center to take part in the calf roping competition or the hog show.

One of the competitors in the calf roping was Mikayla Phillips, a 17-year-old roper, who has been calf roping her whole life.

Phillips is not like many of the ropers at the event, she was one of just a few girls, but she doesn't let that hold her back.

"It's a little bit of wanting to show the guys that girls can do it too, because it's not just a guys sport. There's not very many girls that do it, but yeah I like to show the guys how to do it sometimes," Phillips said.

Phillips started roping because of her family, but it is not just a hobby for her.

She hopes to one day be like her role models currently competing in the sport at a higher level.

"I'd like to go on to be, make my name something like Trevor Brazile or Jackie Hobbs.
I still got a lot of work to do, but yes it is definitely a goal," Phillips said.

Calf roping wasn't the only thing going on at the Stephens County Arena, just a few feet over children and teens competed in the Marlow Winter Classic hog show.

During the hog show local kids showed off hogs they've been training every day.

Carlee Haynie is a 17-year-old hog shower, and her hog who she calls Champ, takes priority every day when she gets off work.

She feeds and walks him before anything else.

She says with the amount of time she has devoted to champ she's developed a special relationship with him.

"It's kind of like any other pet, he's just a pet to me. He's like any other dog that you would fall in love with," Haynie said.

Haynie said it is all to get that special look the judge is searching for, and she has a secret to feeding champ something most don't, potatoes.

She said it just the amount of carbs he needs.

The hog show wraps up Saturday, January 18th, but the calf roping competition continues Sunday, January 19th, starting at 9 a.m. at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center.
