Michael Dibiase arrested after standoff off in northwest Amarillo

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - After over a 12 hour SWAT standoff in northwest Amarillo police finally arrested 37 year old Michael Dibiase.

At around 11:30 AM on January 23rd, 2014, Amarillo police found Dibiase hiding under a large stack of cardboard shipping boxes inside a building on the 3900 block of northwest 12th street.

It started last night when officers learned a suspect, who was wanted on a violation warrant was inside the building  that houses several businesses.

Police believed at the time he may have had access to weapons.

A remote controlled robot was sent in and chemical agents were used to try and draw the suspect out.

Sgt. Brent Barbee with The Amarillo Police Department explained why the standoff lasted so long.

"This was probably one of the most difficult building searches I have ever seen the guys on the swat team take on, just from my point of view. It was a large building that was subdivided into smaller areas, there were small offices that had false roofs inside, there were a large number of boxes and shipping containers, there was a lot of furniture, there were small rooms."

Dibiase was booked on an original conviction stemming from a tampering with/destruction of evidence charge and a charge of hindering apprehension.
