Okla. rep files bill aimed at curbing divorce rate

Posted: Updated:

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) _ An Oklahoma state representative has filed a bill that would increase the waiting period for most Oklahoma couples seeking a divorce.

Rep. Arthur Hulbert, a Republican from Fort Gibson, says the measure is aimed at reducing Oklahoma's divorce rate. The Muskogee Phoenix reports (http://bit.ly/1hEehKh ) that Oklahoma has the second-highest divorce rate in the country.

Hulbert's bill would require a six-month waiting period to dissolve most marriages. Hulbert says his bill would include exemptions for cases when adultery or abuse is involved.

But some researchers question whether the lengthening the waiting period would lead to a drop in the state's divorce rate.

Hulbert's bill isn't the only measure this session dealing with divorce. Another bill, filed by Republican Rep. Sean Roberts of Hominy, would eliminate incompatibility as grounds for divorce.
