Arbitrator sides with Lawton Police Union

Posted: Updated:

Lawton, OK_ The Lawton Police Union prevailed in the arbitration hearing with the City of Lawton. The arbitrator held for the Union in not changing the department's hours to a 5-day, 8-hour work week.

The City argued that the current 10-hour; 4-day work week was costing too much in overtime and jeopardizing public safety. The Union disagreed saying that the switch would not save the City any money and would only be harmful to officer morale and the City's ability to recruit quality officers.

In the award document, it was clear the arbitrator disagreed with the City's comparison to other departments, citing the City should be competitive with departments like Moore, Norman or Enid, not small area departments like Chickasha, Duncan or Altus. Most of those departments operate on the 10-hour shift.

A Union Spokesperson said it's pleased the arbitrator ruled in its favor and hopes the City Council accepts the ruling in its meeting Tuesday. If it does, the Union can move forward with next year's contract negotiations which start in February.
