Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_Oklahoma's Director for the Department of Career and Technology Education was in Lawton Monday.

Dr. Robert Sommers serves as Governor Mary Fallin's Secretary of Education and Workforce Developments.

He met with Cameron University's President and area superintendents. After touring the Goodyear plant, he spoke at a luncheon hosted by the Chamber of Commerce.

Sommers stressed the need for combining academics with hands-on, technical training to give students a better education and a better chance of getting a job after graduation.

Sommers said he is also working with the Oklahoma state legislature to create a more
student-centered environment that prioritizes how much a student learns over the number of years he or she has spent in school.
