LAWTON, Okla._Oklahoma Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon of Lawton formally traveled around the state today announcing his bid for the U.S. Senate.
He capped his day off in Lawton at Bethlehem Baptist, the church he grew up in and credits much of his professional success to. Shannon will be running for Tom Coburn's seat, which will come open at the end of the year.
He said tonight the government needs to limit its role in people's lives.
"The problem is they don't have conservative leadership in the U.S. Senate. When I knocked on doors in this community a few years ago they told me three things: fix the roads, fix the schools and leave us alone. Washington needs to take the same approach about limiting government's role in people's lives," said Shannon.
Congressman James Lankford of Oklahoma City is also seeking the Republican nomination. But, Congressman Jim Bridenstine of Tulsa announced today he would not run.
The primary election is set for June 24th.
