First-degree murder trial starts

LAWTON, Okla__ The trial of a Lawton man accused of murder in a shooting death last year opened Monday.   

Klayton Kitchens watched on as jurors were selected for his first-degree murder case.

Kitchens is accused of shooting Christopher Moore to death after an argument last May.

The selection process was a long and tedious to find just the right jurors to hear the case, especially since the charges in the case had just recently changed to first-degree murder.

It all started last May with an argument between the two.  

Kitchens claimed Moore had stolen a gun from him and they met to return the gun. That's when things went south, and Kitchens says he started to fear for his life and he shot Moore, killing him.

Lawton police arrested Kitchens after he admitted to killing him, but saying it was only in self-defense, and he was later charged with manslaughter.

That changed at the beginning of January when prosecutors upped his charges to first-degree murder because they believe it was a premeditated event.

If the jury selected finds Kitchens guilty of Moore's murder, he can face life in prison.

Jury selection is supposed to wrap up Tuesday morning and testimony will start in the afternoon, where prosecutors will begin presenting their evidence to show that Kitchens was not acting in self- defense, but meant to shoot Moore.

The trial is set to run until Wednesday.
