Okla. House speaker to discuss plans to step down

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon is expected to announce his plans for vacating the House's top leadership post as he runs for a U.S. Senate seat.

Shannon will make his announcement at 10 a.m. Tuesday on the House floor. Shannon, through a spokesman, declined to comment about his plans on Monday.

Shannon is a 35-year-old Republican from Lawton who announced last week that he would enter the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated at the end of the year by Sen. Tom Coburn. Shannon will face two-term U.S. Rep. James Lankford and at least two other Republicans in the GOP primary.

Republican state House members Jeff Hickman; Mike Jackson; and Jason Nelson are actively campaigning to replace Shannon as speaker
