Clay Aiken announces bid for Congress

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, NC._You would think he would have won a Tony Award before sitting in Congress but former American Idol star Clay Aiken says he is taking his talents to politics.

Aiken kicked off his bid for congress with a video that went up on his website www.clayaiken.com.

"I was one year old and my mother knocked on that door with only a diaper bag the clothes on our backs and me in her arms she needed a place to stay where she could escape from my father and start a new life."

In his video, Aiken tells his life story, including growing up in a home torn apart by domestic violence. Aiken is running as a Democrat in North Carolina's second congressional seat. He hopes to take on Congresswoman Renee Ellmers, a two-term Republican, if he wins the Democratic Primary.
