Derailed train closes highway for hours

COMANCHE COUNTY, Okla._ A train derailment closed Highway 62 to all traffic from McIntosh Road to Porter Hill Road throughout Saturday afternoon.

The train was coming from the Dolese Plant, and was crossing Highway 62 just before 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon when it went off the tracks.

The derailment caused traffic to back-up so the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officers were brought in to detour traffic during the lengthy wait to get the train off of the roadway.

Comanche County Director of Emergency Management, Clint Wagstaff, was at the scene and helped to coordinate authorities.

"There is a crew coming out of Oklahoma City from the train company. They will actually straighten up the cars, get them back on the tracks, and get everything flowing again," said Wagstaff.

Highway 62 was blocked for close to four hours as those crews worked to get the train cars moved so traffic could get through.

Even though the highway was back open around 6 p.m. Saturday night, the railroad company continues to investigate what caused the train to derail.

There were no injuries sustained from the derailment, and luckily the train cars were empty.
