LAWTON, Okla._Conditions have improved at a Lawton apartment complex Monday after a ceiling collapsed in a vacant apartment late last week and flooded the apartment next door.
Cornerstone Apartments are managed by ERA Johnny Owens and they only took over the complex a couple of months ago. They said they gave all the residents the new numbers to call if problems such as this one were to come up.
On Sunday a woman living in this flooded apartment couldn't get a hold of the realty company but after talking with them today, it seems the reason the woman's apartment didn't get fixed right away was that she didn't have the correct number to call even though the realty company said they sent out the numbers to all the residents two separate times.
"Now she has those phone numbers and she is perfectly fine. We are actually going to move her into another apartment because what I noticed, the ceiling could have had some water in it and if so it is going to cause some damage and that's no reason to put her out," said Brenda Bentley.
Broker at ERA Johnny Owens, Brenda Bentley said since they don't actually own the apartments they have to have approval from the owners before they can go in and make repairs.
"We have a large property management company and that is one thing we pride ourselves on, getting response out to them right away," said Bentley.
She said the property owners also have to approve the amount of money that can be spent on the repairs. Currently, only 10 out of the 34 units at Cornerstone are occupied.
Bentley also said, "I do believe that we will probably end up moving the rest of these tenants out so that the repairs can be done across the board."
Bentley said they take any problems or concerns with any of the property they manage very serious because the health, safety and welfare of the tenants is very important to them.
"If an owner can't fix something in an apartment or in a house we have to address it with them. If he's not going to do that then I will cut the owner loose and put the tenants somewhere where they will be taken care of, that's what's most important," said Bentley.
Bentley also said they do not have a 24 hour maintenance crew but they always return calls about repairs first thing in the morning.
