Davron Technologies, Inc. designed and manufactured the DTI-1171, an InfraRed (IR) continuous scorch machine that is used in the manufacturing of disc brake pads for the automotive industry. The IR heating allows for the quick scorching of the products in a small footprint of approximately 37 square feet.
The system features both a scorch chamber and a cooling chamber in-line. The heating system consists of 18 short-wave IR lamps mounted in a custom fixture designed specifically for the application. This fixture, along with the control system, allows operators to adjust the intensity of heat applied to the disc brake pads that move through the system by varying the height of the lamps above the conveyor belt. This system provides an efficient and uniform distribution of heat to each brake pad. With an average total cycle time of seven minutes, the DTI-1171 continuous scorch machine processes 480 disc brake pads per hour.
The DTI-1171s IR lamps can be programmed to operate between 212 and 1,292F. Equipped with a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR), the scorch chamber adjusts the voltage to maintain the desired intensity of heat with minimal energy expenditure. The scorch chamber features cooling air inlets that provide cool air to the IR lamps. This system extends the life of the lamps and the fixture. The cooling chamber features one cooling supply fan and one cooling exhaust fan. Airflow within the cooling chamber follows a vertical top-down pattern and impinges high-velocity air on the top of each disc brake pad. Pads are cooled to approximately 140F. The overall dimensions of the DTI-1171 continuous scorch machine are 310 wide x 70 high x 99long. The scorch chambers usable interior dimensions are 26 wide x 10 high x 40 long. The inner chamber is made out of 321 stainless steel backed by six inches of ceramic blanket insulation. The exterior is constructed of 16-gauge carbon steel and finished with high-temperature paint. The exterior panels feature a bolt-on design for easy removal for maintenance. The usable interior dimensions of the cooling chamber are 26 wide x 10 high x 40 long. The conveying system consists of a stainless steel mesh belt and utilizes a variable frequency drive (VFD) for speed adjustment.
Davron provided turnkey design and manufacturing services for the DTI-1171 continuous scorch machine to meet the criteria provided by the customer: the scorch temperature, total cycle time, and space available in the plant. Once acceptance and training were completed at Davron headquarters in Chattanooga, Tenn., Davron prepared and shipped the DTI-1171 to the customers facility in China. The compact design of the system helped facilitate a simple installation and no assistance was required.
