Nebraska city taking on immigration issues

Posted: Updated:

Fremont, Neb. - A small Nebraska town is now taking on the tough battle of immigration.

The city of Fremont, Nebraska has spoken out on illegal immigration yet again in their elections Tuesday night.

Nearly 60 percent of Fremont voters cast ballots in favor of keeping an ordinance that requires all renters to swear they have legal permission to live in the United States. This ordinance was first passed in the city back in 2010 with 57 percent approval.

Fremont, which is a conservative agricultural city outside Omaha, is only one of a handful of cities trying to restrict illegal immigration.

The second vote comes because critics had challenged saying the housing restrictions would not be effective and would really cost the city millions of dollars in legal fees and lose federal grants.
