Amarillo, TX - The Panhandle gets a historic piece of treasure and it's getting a lot of attention. The Airplane, A Douglas DC-3 took it's last flight today and retired at the Texas Air and Space Museum in Amarillo.

Many are saying they hope this new addition will bring more popularity to the museum. The DC-3 was built in 1945 and started out flying worldwide for the U.S. Navy.

The plane was originally planned to retire in Oklahoma City, but because there was no room, Amarillo is now it's new home.

City of Amarillo Mayor, Paul Harpole says "I'm really excited to have a new plane in Amarillo, and this is really a piece of history. I just got to tour it and the FAA people were telling us how they used this, and it's a pretty amazing story...so it will be something that the aviation museum can really draw some attention with and really teach some people about aviation history that not a lot of people know about."

The mayor is not the only one showing excitement. The rest of the team at the museum is happy to have such a huge piece of history, along with some panhandle residents.

A number of museums showed interest to display the plane but the FAA felt the Panhandle was the right place for people to see the airplane.
