LAWTON, Okla._ Lawton police converged on a neighborhood off NW Sheridan Rd. and Lincoln Ave. Friday night in an effort to deter crime.
Police officers were working in an area known as zone two, one of two target areas on the city's north side that they're focusing on over the next several weeks.
The department recently received a grant from the Attorney General's Office to put more officers on the street in an effort to raise the police presence, in hopes of bringing down the crime rate.
At random checkpoints, police checked for driver's licenses, tags and insurance, which can sometimes lead to arrests for bigger crimes.
"It's not a deal where we're trying to make their life miserable. We're just trying to let them know we're out on the street. We're looking for bad guys, and this is just one way of doing that," said Lawton police Captain Cliff Blasengame.
Captain Blasengame said these patrols are just the start. He said they'll be out at various times of the day, spotlighting the potential trouble spots.
