Liquor prices may rise in New Mexico

Posted: Updated:

New Mexico may be raising the price on liquor to help those who are addicted to it.

Counties in New Mexico would have the opportunity to raise taxes on liquor to finance programs for treating and preventing alcoholism under a proposal just approved by the state Senate.

Counties can decide to impose a local liquor excise tax which would be a five cent increase on a glass of wine, bottle of beer or cocktail. Under current state law only  McKinley County has a local tax on liquor for alcohol programs.

The bill passed the senate 27-14 Sunday and now moves to the House for consideration. Supporters have said the county has been able to finance several services that have reduced alcohol-related deaths.

If all counties were to impose this tax, nearly $44 million would be generated for those programs.
