Grassfire burns several acres near Empire

Stephens Co., OK_Empire firefighters were almost lost in a cloud of smoke that poured from a grassfire near 58th and Cherokee that ignited around 5:30pm Friday.

Firefighters kept our photographer quite a distance from the activity.  From his vantage point, he could see there were homes in the area, but none were in immediate danger as firefighters in brush trucks hosed down the burning field.

At one point, a larger fire appeared to be burning in the distance. The smoke was so thick at times that all that could be seen were the fire trucks' flashing lights and the rising plume could be seen for miles.

No word on what caused the fire to ignite.
