Thousand attend 25th Annual Oyster Fry in Frederick

Posted: Updated:

FREDERICK, Okla_Over 250 gallons of oysters were served Saturday at the 25th Annual Frederick Fantastic Oyster fry.

The annual oyster fry benefits Frederick's Chamber of Commerce. The event provides a great opportunity for the small community to come together, while also bringing people from surrounding areas to town for some good food and camaraderie.

The first question is raw or fried when it comes to the oyster fry.

A question that's been asked since the oyster fry started 25 years ago.  It began rather small, but now organizer Twyla Elsener says it's grown in ways they never imagined.

"We feed an average of 1,000 people in three hours, and we bread over 40,000 oysters Saturday, hand breaded," said Twyla.

Since oysters aren't readily available in Oklahoma, people flock to Frederick to get their fill. The experienced bunch brought their own dips, sauces, and toppings for their oysters.

Whether it was horseradish, lemon juice, hot sauce, ketchup, cocktail sauce, saltines, or a combination, everyone prefers their own way.

It takes over 200 volunteers to keep the Frederick Fantastic Oyster fry running.

17-year-old volunteer Cordelle Elsener can't remember a time when she didn't go to the oyster fry.  She said there are so many good things about the fry.

"The food of course and the camaraderie of being with everybody. It is like the once a time a year you get together and just be with everybody. Being with your friends," said Cordelle.
