City, police union settle on short-term contract

LAWTON, Okla._ The city council here accepted the police union's second best offer for a labor contract at Tuesday night's meeting.

The details are still being worked out to reach a compromise. The city wants more police officers on the streets at a given time. The police union is defending the officers' wishes for a 10-hour, four-day work week.

The city has since appointed a committee to oversee the progress both sides are making in order to hammer out another new contract by the start of the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

For the past year, the city and police union have been battling to reach a new contract. The issue went to arbitration after months of not being able to draft out a deal. In January, the arbitrator ruled in favor of the police union, but the city disagreed and voted it down, only to reverse that decision a few days later.
