Red Cross practices disaster drills

Posted: Updated:

Here in the Panhandle we are no strangers to things like tornadoes, wildfires and severe thunderstorms.

Now that storm season is quickly approaching volunteers from the American Red Cross gathered together to practice different disaster drills. Red Cross chapters from across the state, including ours here in Amarillo, all tested their ability to respond to different weather related situations.

Disaster program manager, Brady Christian says it's a group effort to make sure everyone is safe. "We've got FEMA out here, we've got the Ares radio team out here, and some Boy Scouts. We go in and do damage assessment as quickly as possible after a disaster so we know how many people we have to send in how much money we will have to allocate it really tells us what our response to the disaster is going to be," he told us.

Volunteers visited different neighborhoods for a mock test to make sure everyone is up to par and prepared in case of a disaster .
