Oklahoma death toll due to flu rises to 53

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Oklahoma Department of Health says two more people have died from the flu during the past week, adding to the record number of influenza-related deaths in the state.

The agency says a total of 53 people have died due to the virus during the flu season that started in late September. The previous record of 46 flu-related deaths in 2009, the year that Oklahoma health officials began tracking the statistic, was broken two weeks ago.

Tulsa County is leading the flu death count with nine, followed by Comanche County with six and Oklahoma County with four. Cleveland, Logan, Pittsburg and Wagoner counties have each had three flu-related deaths. Carter, Creek, Le Flore, Muskogee and Washington counties have each had two deaths. Twelve other counties have each recorded one death.
