Buchanan Street Getting a New Look

Steps are being taken in the revitalization of downtown Amarillo.

The City of Amarillo has finally received the funding received the funding it needs to give one major street a makeover.

Buchanan Street in Downtown Amarillo will start to look different in the near future. Mayor Paul Harpole says it will really start to change the look of downtown.

The City of Amarillo applied for funds to do this project through the Federal Highways Transportation Enhancement Funds.

Paul Braun with Texas Department of Transportation says, "This one was approved for about $1.5 million from the federal government. The city itself is going to up in about $385,000."

This funding will be used to bring trees, street lining, and updated sidewalks to Buchanan Street and 10th.

"Well, if you walk the sidewalks, the need is pretty evident because they're pretty torn up. So, that will enhance it and update it," said Harpole.

The city says it has a blue print of how they envision Buchanan Street to look after ti is revitalized.

The mayor says the next step is to bid the project and begin to do the work.
We're told the Buchanan Street Street project is just a stepping stone for an even bigger downtown revitalization effort. The city is planning for a ballpark, hotel, and parking garage. The city says that project is constantly changing, and is still resolving some funding issues.
