Duncan dispatchers field calls reporting mystery noise

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla._ Stephens County deputies and Duncan police were left scratching their heads after dispatchers fielded dozens of calls reporting an unusually loud boom that sounded like an explosion.

Dispatchers started receiving the calls Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

People reported hearing the boom from all areas of the city and county. Callers said the noise was so loud they thought a plane may have crashed, but police found nothing at either one of its airports.

Sheriff's deputies and police searched various areas but turned up empty-handed. Duncan dispatchers contacted Sheppard Air Force Base, whose planes were all accounted for.

Fort Sill officials told 7NEWS they were not engaging in any training exercises near Duncan at the time the noise was heard that could have accounted for the mystery explosion, and said the noise heard may have been caused by a sonic boom.
