LPS classes will be in session on Monday

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton Public Schools will still be in session Monday, March 31, even with many teachers rallying at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

An estimated 30,000 Oklahoma educators are expected to rally next Monday at the Oklahoma State Capitol, and that crowd will include dozens of Lawton Public Schools' teachers. But that doesn't mean Lawton youngsters have the day off.

While many Oklahoma school districts have chosen to dismiss classes that day, LPS is not among them. Classes will go on as normally scheduled, according to Superintendent Dr. Tom Deighan.

Teachers choosing to be at the rally have the full support from the school district in their efforts to practice free speech and be politically active. As such, the teachers that go will be using a professional day to participate in "Oklahoma's Rally for Education."

The event is intended to call public attention to such issues as inadequate funding of public education, an increasing number of state mandates and an overemphasis on student testing, among other things.

The event is being organized by more than a half-dozen state education groups, including the Oklahoma PTA, Oklahoma Education Association., Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Education and the Oklahoma State School Boards Association.

The district understands the importance of having its students prepared for the upcoming student testing period, which includes Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests and end-of-instruction tests for high school students.  These tests are mandated by the state and play a significant role in determining student progress and school performance.

LPS expects approximately 100 local educators to participate in the rally which is less than 10% of the district's certified staff.  Families can expect no disruption in their students' normal school activities.
