Stephens County hopes to have every shelter registered

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla._Stephens County is hoping new technology will help save lives this severe weather season.

Nearly 600 people have signed up for the county's Storm Shelter Registration program which started in 2010. The program allows officials to locate each tornado shelter at all times before, during and after a major storm. Each shelter is also listed with contact information for the owners as well as an out-of-state emergency contact. Officials say they hope this program will help keep Stephens County safe during the worst kind of weather.

"If you go back and look at the state or the United States, especially in an area like Moore, homes were just demolished and there's these shelters that are in the garages or houses or maybe the backyard and with the debris you don't know where those shelters are," said Gary Ball, Stephens County Emergency Management Director.

Emergency management says their goal with the program is to fill the entire county with listed shelters. To register yours, you can contact Stephens County Emergency Management at 580-255-3411 or email them at
