Person of interest named in fatal hit and run

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Police say they have identified a person of interest in Tuesday morning's fatal hit-and-run.

It happened just after midnight on Cache Road, near 52nd Street. One man was hit and killed as he walked in the street. Police said witnesses came forward with information that helped them find the pickup that is believed to have hit the victim. Police have identified the person of interest as Bryan Shane Blackaby, who also goes by Shane Patterson.

The victim, 57-year-old Troy Magee, and his friend were walking east along Cache near 52nd Street. Magee was walking in the road and his friend was walking in the grass. Police said a pickup struck Magee and continued going. Magee was taken to Comanche County Memorial Hospital where he died two hours later.

Investigators spent this morning reviewing surveillance video from businesses in the area where the incident occurred. After getting a tip from a witness about the identity of the suspect and the location of the pickup truck, they changed their search to finding both Blackaby and his vehicle.

"Through some witnesses that have come forward, we were able to locate the suspect vehicle and we actually have that in our possession now. We have it locked and secured waiting for a search warrant," said Lt. Brad Davis of the Lawton Police Department.

Police had originally been told by friends of Blackaby that he planned on turning himself in by the end of the day. Police are unsure why Blackaby fled the scene.

"The typical reasons we get is one, we didn't know it happened or they may have been intoxicated or they may have been drinking or they may not have had a driver's license. It's still early on in that part of the investigation," explained Lt. Davis.

Lt. Davis says once the investigation is concluded, Blackaby could be facing charges of leaving the scene of a fatality accident which is a felony manslaughter charge. Davis says witnesses with first-hand knowledge of the crime were key to putting this case together so quickly.

"It's hard a lot of times to want to do the right thing, especially if you may know the suspect or something like that. But this individual decided to do the right thing and come forward and tell us what information he knew," said Lt. Davis.

Lawton police are asking if you have any information on where Bryan Shane Blackaby, also known as Shane Patterson, could be please call Lawton Crime Stoppers at (580) 355-4636
