City pays settlement to former LPD chief and officer

Posted: Updated:
LAWTON, Okla._ The Lawton City Council approved a financial settlement in lawsuits filed by former police chief, Ronnie Smith, and former police officer, Robert Puccino Jr., for wrongful termination.

The city agreed to make Smith eligible to receive a city retirement pension, and will make a payment into that fund of $75,099 thousand on Smith's behalf. They also agreed to pay Puccino Jr. a total of $100 thousand over the next four years.

Smith and Puccino Jr. filed the suit in federal court last June.

Smith claimed he was forced to resign as chief in March of 2012, under the threat of being terminated. He said one of the reasons he was given was he misrepresented the re-hiring of officer, Puccino Jr., who was also fired.
