Children learn recycling by cleaning Elmer Thomas Park

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Elementary school students were helping to clean-up Friday by taking to Elmer Thomas Park to pick up trash.

First graders from Woodland Hills Elementary filled up dozens of trash bags from the park. The field trip to the park was designed to put what the young students are learning in the classroom to use out in the community.

"I hope we teach kids to recycle at an early age and that they'll continue to do it throughout their lives. The better citizens we create when their younger, the better citizens can take of us when we're older," said Woodland Hills teacher, Katie Duffy.

Duffy says the cleanup was supposed to happen on Earth Day but was postponed because of the rain. Around 50 children participated in Friday's event.
