Lawton student advances to nationals in Sodexo's "Future Chef" competition

LAWTON, Okla._It's called “The Crabby Sandwich,” and it's one Lawton student’s creation that is now getting national attention.

"People think when I say crabby sandwich, they think it's made of crab but it's not really made of it, it only looks like it,” said young chef Matthew Aguilar.

Aguilar, a student at Pioneer Park Elementary, created a crab-shaped ham and cheese sandwich as part of Sodexo's “Future Chef” competition and it's pleasing the pallets of judges across the nation. Aguilar beat out 40 other LPS students earlier this spring and another 140 students across the Midwest region to be voted the best sandwich. He's now one of just five finalists for the national competition.

"This is the first time we have had anybody go to the semifinals, much less the finals. So this is really exciting," said Tony Shepard, Child Nutrition Director for Lawton Public Schools.

Next week, videos of each finalist making their specialty will be on Youtube and the contestant with the most votes will win.
