Two Canyon HS students are going to NASA this summer

Amarillo, TX - Canyon ISD will be sending two of its students to NASA this summer.

"The "HAS" project also known as the High School Aerospace Scholar-- will give a jump start to these two students' future and have them explore the possibilities of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

"I want to be a mechanical engineer." says Phillip Gibbs, Canyon High School Junior

"Be a pilot for nasa" says Tanner Fleman, Canyon High School Junior

From all across the State of Texas-- hundreds of high school juniors apply for the summer NASA Aerospace Scholarship Program-- but only a few are selected.

Meet Phillip Gibbs and Tanner Fleman from Canyon High School.

They are the locals who will be traveling this summer to Houston for a week long internship at NASA.

"I am super excited that they are going, I think that I asked them more this past week, did you find out yet, did you find out yet, it's super exciting for them to go." says Tara Sloan, physics teacher at Canyon High School

The process starts with students applying online-- and dedicating several months of interactive online learning with engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center-- that include-- learning chapters about the history and present status of NASA.

"Basically you write an essay of what you're suppose to do then you had to design it through a computer program. So you're basically thinking, designing, creating, you're doing everything on your own." says Tanner Fleman

And once the students make it to Houston, they'll have hands on experiences and learn how to be a team leader, working side by side with astronauts on real live spaceships.

These students will have everything paid for, including flight, food and hotel.

And will also have an opportunity of leaving with another scholarship.
