Amarillo, TX - A twenty inch water main break has an Amarillo residential area blocked off on Travis street where crews are working overnight to repair the break.
The water has been flowing on the sidewalks and grass and the whole block has been closed off since early Wednesday morning.
A 20 inch cast iron water main busted around 8:30 Wednesday morning at Travis & SW 26th Avenue. Crews came out about thirty minutes later and are still working on fixing the break..
Floyd Hartman, Assistant Director of Utilities with the City of Amarillo says residents should expect low water pressure.
"This size of main does take some time, the crews are really good at it. We hope to have everything, back in full service of water in the next 24hrs."
That includes for the residential homes and Austin Middle School. He is also urging residents to avoid non-essential use of water until repairs are made.
This is an isolated incident and this area does not have a history on water breaks. The main break pipe is at least 50 years old and at this time there is not an answer as to what exactly caused the leak.
