Drill Sergeant of the Year competition is underway on Fort Sill

Posted: Updated:

FORT SILL, Okla._Five of Fort Sill's Drill Sergeants are looking to become the best on Fort Sill as they compete for 'Drill Sergeant of the Year'.

The competition started Monday and runs through the weekend. It's an annual tradition to see who will represent Fort Sill at the National Drill Sergeant of the Year competition. So far they have completed day and night land navigation, drill- and-ceremony and rappelling off a forty-foot tower. Wednesday brought the challenge of an obstacle course.

Becoming Fort Sill's Drill Sergeant of the Year means not only do you get to help enhance future soldier training but also a chance to say you are the best at what you do. It's a dream for most, if not all, Drill Sergeants. We followed one of the competitors through the thirteen obstacles which had them running, crawling, jumping, and sweating.

Drill Sergeant Sophia Marinakes loves being a Drill Sergeant.

"When I joined the Army that's what I wanted to be, they said I could join but had to pick an MOS first," explained Drill Sgt. Marinakes.

She wants to be the best Drill Sergeant and that's why she joined in on the competition

"Just to see what it is I got, you know. I know it was going to be challenging, so my thought process was just to get in there and finish any task they give me, do everything to the best of my ability and hopefully come out on top. If not, then it was a great experience," said Drill Sgt. Marinakes. "It's a good way to know where you're at as a Drill Sergeant. Everyone’s an outstanding Drill Sergeant in their own way, shape, or form but coming out here and competing puts the whole Drill Sergeant and Total Soldier concept all into one."

Another experience for Drill Sergeant Marinakes is all of the stories she’ll be able to tell later on.

"You will never forget being a Drill Sergeant. You will never forget any of the stories that you have," said Drill Sgt. Marinakes.

She hopes to later tell the story of when she won Fort Sill's Drill Sergeant of the year. Those Drill Sergeants still have a ways to go, the competition runs through the weekend. The winner will be announced at a special ceremony on May 7.

Becoming the Army's Drill Sergeant of the Year is a high honor, it brings with it an opportunity to see how soldiers are trained and make necessary improvements.
