Large fire burns out of control in Jackson County

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS, Okla._The Jackson County Task Force along with the Sheriff's Office and several other fire departments are working tonight to fight a large fire that's spread out of control just west of Altus.

According to the Altus Fire Department, crews were called to the scene at the Salt Fork River north of Olustee around 2 p.m. They believe the blaze had been rekindled from a controlled fire that burned in the area back on Thursday.

State troopers shut Highway 62 down for about half an hour this afternoon as smoke took over the area. At this hour, crews say they're working to keep the flames on the south side of 62.

No homes are reportedly in danger at this point, but the Red Cross has responded to help assist firefighters who continue to work the blaze.
