UPDATE: Dive teams recover body from Fort Sill lake

UPDATE: Lawton Police released a press statement Tuesday morning confirming the drowning victim from Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area on Fort Sill was recovered Monday evening. Fort Sill has not released further details at this time.

FORT SILL, Okla._For 48 hours, divers from all over the region have been scouring the waters at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area on Fort Sill looking for a missing soldier.

Fort Sill officials released new information on the accident Saturday night that sparked the search. The possible drowning victim is a soldier from Fort Sill. According to officials, two soldiers were on the water Saturday in a one-person kayak that flipped. Witnesses told investigators the soldier panicked as the other tried to help him to shore. Witnesses said one person did go underwater and they never resurfaced.

Now Fort Sill has Lawton and Wichita Falls dive teams along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s lake unit all out to assist in this search. Crews are working with some tough terrain in the lake, the water in the search area is anywhere from 60-100 feet deep with extremely steep drop-offs at the lake floor. Because the water is so deep, crews are unable to conduct dives at nighttime so they only have precious daylight hours each day to continue the investigation.

Officials will not release the name of the victim yet and there's no word on whether he was wearing a life jacket or not or if he was able to swim. However, the family was out with crews at the search site earlier today.
