Tomlinson Middle, four LPS elementary schools implement uniform policy

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._ For the first time, the Lawton Public School District it expanding its uniform policy to include a middle school.

The school board approved a proposal that will require students at Tomlinson Middle School to follow a revised dress code, starting this fall.

“I think we’ll get a better sense of commitment, a better respect for one another in our school district,” says Eddie Williams, principal, who adds the current dress code is violated daily.

He hopes the new policy will keep kids in the classroom and out of the principal's office.

Four more elementary schools will make the change as well; including, Whittier, Hugh Bish, John Adams and Washington Elementary.

Superintendent Tom Deighan says he is supportive of the revised dress policy.

“Next year, I have already directed our staff (to) compile data and see how this affects learning,” says Dr. Deighan. “As we move forward, we'll decide whether to expand to more schools."

The revised dress code was first put in place in 2012. It calls for students to wear slacks and a polo shirt. Come August, more than half of the district's 22 elementary schools will have implemented the policy.
