USPS to Stamp Out Hunger

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Letter carriers throughout Lawton are preparing for their annual food drive coming up this Saturday.

"We're trying to mitigate hunger. There's about one child in five in Oklahoma that goes to bed hungry," said Barry Hess, food drive coordinator.

Barry Hess is a postal carrier in Lawton and president of the local chapter of the National Letter Carriers' union. He says residents, not just in Lawton, but in towns around southwest Oklahoma have received a postcard and small plastic bag in their mailbox. He's hoping people will fill those bags up with any kind of food to help out the less fortunate.

"It's one of those deals where you wake up one day and you realize that not everything is perfect in the world. You're trying to help people, children, old folks not go to bed hungry," said Hess.

Postal workers will pick up the food donations on Saturday. All donations go to the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank and the local chapter of the Salvation Army.
