Students participate in 10,000 steps challenge

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._More than 500 southwest Oklahoma fourth graders enjoyed the first day of a week filled with fun activities at the YMCA.

The students will spend the week rock climbing, doing Zumba, swimming and playing basketball as a reward for completing at least 10,000 steps a day. It's all a part of Comanche County Memorial Hospital's walk program designed to fight childhood obesity by encouraging a fun, positive and healthy lifestyle for kids.

"They're so excited, they work so hard for everything else educationally but they're excited to be a 4th grader just because of this program,” said 4th grade teacher, Sydnee Johnson. “It brings in so much excitement and work and a time where they're rewarded for all their hard work."

Fourth grader, Hayden Johnson, says completing 10,000 steps a day was a challenge, but one he gladly accepted so he could be a part of this fun day.

"It provides good health and you get to have fun at the YMCA for a full day," exclaimed Johnson.

The steps are recorded on pedometers donated by local businesses and recorded in walk books provided by the McMahon Foundation and CCMH.
