Stolen car found in Lake Helen

Posted: Updated:
LAWTON, Okla_ A bizarre scene at Elmer Thomas Park Saturday when the Lawton Police Department dive team was called out to Lake Helen to pull a  Mercedes Benz out of the water.

Lawton police say no one was found in the car or in the lake, but the car was reported stolen.

These are the only tracks that are leading to the lake, but these tracks were made when the car was pulled out.  Leaving investigators wondering where the car entered and how it got there.

"I kept seeing cops pull down here and was wondering if they were just enjoying a nice day at the lake because it is beautiful," Kevin Nemitz, an onlooker, said.

That wasn't the case. Investigators combed every inch of Lake Helen, searching for answers.

"On the side we are on here we haven't found tracks where it was driven off, the dock up here we haven't seen anything so only thing we need to check now is over on the north side of the lake to see if there are any tracks where someone driven off of over there," Lt. Brad Davis said.

There is a lot of mystery still behind the car, what we do know is that it was reported stolen Friday night, and with only that, there's a lot of work left for investigators.

"It'll be assigned to a detective they'll take it from there.  I'm assuming it happened late last night, early this morning so there probably wasn't any witnesses out here who actually saw anything, but we might go back and some of the local convenience stores and check if we have any video," Davis said.

There may be no eye witnesses of how the car got in the lake, but that wasn't the case for getting it out.

Many, including Nemitz, flocked to the lake to see what the commotion was all about.

"[I] seen some divers in there and we also saw a tow truck come up and so we were like yeah they're pulling up a car or something. It's not every day you get to see a car pulled out of the lake," Nemitz said.

Nemitz says he doesn't know if that can be topped, even by a fisherman's standards.

"I guess that's the biggest catch of the day.  I guess we might as well take this over to Fisherman's Cove and have this for the catch of the day," Nemitz said.

Police are still early on in their investigation into how the car got into the water in the first place.

Lieutenant Davis did say that it looks to be driven into the lake intentionally.
